Moving to Platinum Visa
We’ll move you over to your new Platinum Visa account in September 2025. We’ll send you a reminder when your new Platinum Visa card is on its way. If you’ll be away from home in September or early October and won’t be there to receive your new card, please get in touch with us. We'll work together to find the best solution for you.
Yes, your Platinum Visa card will come with a new card number, expiry date and security code.
If your new Platinum Visa doesn’t meet your needs, you have options. You can switch to a Zero Visa or close your Airpoints card. New and existing business customers can apply for a Business Low Rate Visa.
Please note, if you make the change before 31 October 2025, you'll stop earning Airpoints from the date you make the change.
You'll receive a new Airpoints credit card to use until your new Platinum Visa arrives. Once you activate your Platinum Visa, please destroy your old Airpoints card.
If you order a replacement card, you'll receive a new Airpoints credit card to use until you move to the Platinum Visa in September.
Airpoints
Air New Zealand owns the Airpoints programme and associated benefits and sets the Airpoints terms and conditions that apply.
Under the Airpoints terms and conditions, Airpoints Dollars will remain valid for four years from the date they were added to your Airpoints account. After four years, those Airpoints Dollars are eligible to expire. Expiry of points happens once a year, on the anniversary of the day you joined the Airpoints programme. If you have any questions about points expiry or your anniversary date, please contact Air New Zealand.
The non-expiry benefit associated with your Kiwibank Airpoints credit card will remain in place until 31 October 2025. For any Airpoints Dollars that are older than four years (or close to the four-year mark), you may want to redeem these before 31 October 2025 to ensure you don’t miss out.
Status Points generally have a 12-month validity. 50% of the Status Points required for Silver and Gold tier status can be earned from credit card spend. For Elite tier status 40% of the Status Points required can be earned from credit card spend.
For any questions about Airpoints benefits, please contact Air New Zealand directly.
Receiving a Platinum Visa
You'll receive your new card shortly after your September statement. We'll notify you when it’s on the way.
Yes, you'll need to activate your new card. When you receive it, it'll come with instructions on how to do this.
Yes, your new Platinum Visa will come with the same PIN. If you'd like to change it, you can set a new PIN in the mobile app or internet banking.
Insurance
If you have an Air New Zealand Airpoints Platinum Visa, you'll get this benefit from 1 July 2025 on your current card.
If you have an Air New Zealand Airpoints Low Fee or Standard Visa, you'll start enjoying this benefit when we move you to Platinum Visa in September. Please note the domestic travel insurance benefits will be for unforeseeable cancellations and travel delays.
The Platinum Visa includes overseas travel insurance when paying for travel and/or accommodation before leaving New Zealand. From 1 July 2025, domestic travel insurance benefits will also be available on this card. Eligibility criteria apply.
Yes, your travel insurance cover will carry over to your Platinum Visa card. However, if you close your account, you’ll lose this cover and won’t be able to make a claim. For more information, please read our Travel Insurance Policy Wording.
If you have Credit Card Repayment Insurance, it will carry over to your new Platinum Visa account. Please note, this is a product we no longer offer.
Purchases & payments
Most regular payments, like Netflix or Spotify, will automatically carry over from your Airpoints credit card to your new Platinum Visa. If a payment doesn’t go through, the service provider will usually let you know.
After you’ve moved to a Platinum Visa, any payments made into your Airpoints credit card account will carry over to your new Platinum Visa account.
If you currently have Apple Pay or Google Pay™ set up, your new Platinum Visa will automatically replace your Airpoints card in your mobile wallet. If you haven’t set this up yet and would like to, check out our guides on how to do this for Apple Pay and Google Pay™.
Most transactions made with your old Airpoints card will be redirected to your new Platinum Visa, as long as they aren't cancelled or dishonoured by the merchant. This includes things such as holiday accommodation.
Any refunds or credits to your old Airpoints card will automatically be redirected to your new Platinum Visa. If you close your Platinum Visa before the refund is processed, we can transfer the money to another active Kiwibank account. To do this, send us a secure message via the mobile app or internet banking, or call us.
If you don't have an active Kiwibank account or we can't verify you over the phone, you'll need to visit your nearest Kiwibank. You'll need to bring your ID and proof of address with you.
If you notice fraudulent transactions on your Airpoints card, here's what you should do:
- Contact us: Report the fraudulent transactions immediately. Our team will start an investigation, and moving to Platinum Visa won't affect our dispute process or our ability to investigate and resolve your transaction.
- Card replacement: You'll receive a new Platinum Visa card with a new card number. If the fraudulent activity occurs right before we plan to move you to the new Platinum Visa, you'll get the new card then. If you need a replacement before you're moved to a Platinum Visa, you'll still be able to receive a replacement Airpoints card.
- Set up your card: When your new card arrives, because you're getting a replacement card due to fraudulent transactions being detected, you'll need to set up Apple Pay or Google Payâ„¢ if you use these services. You'll also need to update any regular payments with your new card details to avoid missing a payment. Remember to keep your new card details safe.
Fees & charges
Airpoints Platinum account fees will be charged as usual through to 31 October 2025. If your fee is charged from June 2025, you’ll get a partial refund at that time. If your fee was charged in May 2025, you’ll receive a partial refund back to your account by the end of that month. This means you’ll only be paying for the period up to 31 October 2025, when Airpoints benefits will end.
For Airpoints Low Fee or Airpoints Standard credit cards, the account fee is the same for the Platinum Visa and will be charged as usual. Joint/additional cardholder fees will be treated the same way.
If you’re moving from an Airpoints Platinum credit card, you’ll be charged the Platinum Visa account fee of $25 on your November statement. The account fee will be charged every six months.
If you’re moving from an Airpoints Low Fee or Airpoints Standard credit card, there’s no change. You can expect to be charged the $25 account fee at the same six-monthly interval. Joint/additional cardholder account fees will be treated the same way.
Any balance transfers will move to your new Platinum Visa and the balance transfer interest rate will continue to apply until the term ends.
All purchases that appear on your Platinum Visa, starting from your first Platinum Visa statement, will qualify for up to 55 days interest free.
All purchases and cash advances that appear on your Platinum Visa, starting from your first Platinum Visa statement, will qualify for the new 12.90% p.a. interest rate.
