Travel Insurance for Kiwibank Credit Cards policy wording - for customers who were issued with their credit card from 19 September 2013
When Kiwibank was launched in 2002, the owner, New Zealand Post (NZ Post), provided a guarantee of certain payment obligations of Kiwibank and Kiwibank’s subsidiaries. This was to give customers a level of assurance on the safety of their funds in the new bank.
Transfer of the guarantee from New Zealand Post to the Crown
From 30 November 2022, NZ Post’s obligations under the guarantee as at that date have been assigned and transferred from NZ Post to The Sovereign in right of New Zealand, acting by and through the Minister of Finance (the Crown). On and from 30 November 2022, NZ Post’s obligations under the guarantee became obligations of the Crown, rather than NZ Post.
On 31 October 2016, NZ Post provided notice to Kiwibank of the termination of the guarantee. The notice of termination took effect on 28 February 2017. At the time of withdrawal, Kiwibank had been operating for 14 years under the guarantee, and had developed substantial banking experience, including trading successfully through the Global Financial Crisis. The bank produced an after tax profit for $124 million for the year ended 30 June 2015 and paid dividends to its owner. This was strong evidence of the financial strength of the bank.
How does this affect my existing Kiwibank deposit?
Deposits in Kiwibank which were in place on 28 February 2017 remain covered by the Crown guarantee until they are withdrawn, renewed or otherwise reduced or repaid. Any new deposits made after the guarantee termination date don’t have the benefit of the guarantee.
