How it works
-
Excess
The excess is the amount you pay for each claim. The standard excess for an owner-occupied house is $400, you can select a higher option and this will lower your premiums. For things like driveways, fences, pools and paths damaged by natural disasters a $5,000 excess applies.
-
Claims
If you need to make an insurance claim get in contact as soon as you can to get the process started. There'll be someone available to help you 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
-
Payment options
You can pay your premiums by direct debit or credit card. You can choose to pay fortnightly, monthly or annually. There's no extra cost if you select to pay monthly or fortnightly.
How much cover do you need?
- If your house is destroyed by events such as storm, flood, earthquakes, natural landslips or volcanic eruptions it may be rebuilt up to your sum insured.
- If your house is destroyed by a fire (except a fire following a natural disaster) you may be covered for up to 20% more than your sum insured.
- Your sum insured isn't the same as the market value of your house. It’s calculated based on how much it’s likely to cost to rebuild after a natural disaster.
- You can ask a licensed builder, quantity surveyor, architect or registered valuer to help you work out your sum insured, or you can do it yourself with the independent online Cordell Sum Sure calculator.
