Everything we do is done with our purpose in mind: helping Kiwis to grow their wealth and enjoy their future. Backed by our values: Trust, Respect, Excellence, Agility and Transparency, we will provide the leadership, wisdom, innovation, tools and solutions that make it easy and rewarding for all Kiwis to invest.

Our history

What began around a kitchen table has continued to grow successfully, and with our innovative, can-do attitude it’s onwards and upwards from here on in.

2000 – 2010

  • With a mission to make investing easy to understand and give kiwis access to global investment markets, Gareth Morgan and Andrew Gawith created Gareth Morgan Investments (GMI). The principles they built the business on still stand today.
  • In 2007, A KiwiSaver scheme (then named the Gareth Morgan KiwiSaver Scheme) was launched alongside the Private Portfolio Service – which at the time was the only product GMI offered.
  • By the end of 2007 we had already reached 15,000 KiwiSaver members.
  • In 2008 a Superannuation scheme was established bringing the total number of products GMI offered to 3.
  • As we headed into the second decade of the 2000’s we reached 50,000 KiwiSaver members.

2011 - 2015

  • Gareth Morgan Investments is sold to Kiwi Wealth Management Limited, part of Kiwi Group Holdings Limited (KGHL) who also own sister company Kiwibank.
  • We reached 50 staff!
  • In 2013 the Kiwi Wealth KiwiSaver Scheme started to be distributed through the Kiwibank network.
  • A big milestone for the business was reached when we hit $2bn funds under management across all our products.
  • We were appointed a Default KiwiSaver Scheme provider.

2016 – 2018

  • We gave Gareth his name back as he began his political journey as leader of The Opportunities Party. Kiwi Wealth became the main brand for all our wealth products and services.
  • Kiwi Wealth is recognised at the Workplace Savings NZ awards, awarded the ‘Best Overall KiwiSaver Member Experience’
  • We reached $5bn funds under management across all our products and hit 190,000 KiwiSaver members.
  • Future You®, our online retirement planning tool, takes the runner up spot at the Pensions and Investments WorldPensionSummit 2017 Innovation Awards.

How we’re helping New Zealand

We’re helping Kiwis reach their retirement goals

We are the largest NZ owned default KiwiSaver scheme provider with 190,000 members and more than $5billion funds under management.

We care about investing responsibly

The first default KiwiSaver Scheme provider to have all investment funds certified by RIAA – we care about NZ which is why we’re all in on responsible investing.

Kiwi values – supporting us is supporting New Zealand

Because our shareholders are government owned (ACC, NZ Super Fund and NZ Post) our profits stay here in New Zealand for the benefit of everyone who calls New Zealand home.

Three things you might not know

We champion innovation

We’re always looking to improve the ways we can help our members and clients get better outcomes no matter what their goal. By giving them innovative, digital tools we give them chance to take control.

Not only has our online tool, Future You® being recognised in various global awards, we’re also the first financial services provider in the country to be approved by the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) to deliver personalised digital financial advice. Take a peek at what that means.

We’re committed to responsible investing

It applies to everything we do. None of our funds have holdings in tobacco or controversial weapons companies, directly or indirectly. At the same time, we not only exclude companies based on what they produce, we also exclude based on their behaviour and impact on people and the environment.

We’ve also been certified by a key industry body. All the investment funds in the Kiwi Wealth KiwiSaver Scheme are certified by the Responsible Investment Association Australasia (RIAA), the key local industry body representing responsible and ethical investors across Australia and New Zealand*.

We take a global approach

Investing globally is one of our strengths. We take this approach as we aim to get the best outcomes for our members and clients, we invest in a broad range of assets, spreading the risk and giving us a world of opportunity to choose from – this includes New Zealand, because New Zealand is part of the globe, too.

Because we're investing in large and liquid markets, our investment team can react speedily to market conditions.

By not having all our eggs in one basket, we give our members access to a much more diverse pool of investments.

Read our going global guide to learn more about a global approach to investing.
