It was a massive weekend for football in Auckland... actually... the whole of Aotearoa. Auckland FC have climbed the peak of the A-league, in just their second season! AFC dominated and defeated Sydney FC on Saturday night. The stadium was packed, and the atmosphere was electric. You just don't see that at the club level in rugby.
Frustrations with the economy were cast aside... and people allowed themselves to have a good time. And everyone in the stadium had a great night. Even the would-be streaker was caught and ejected without any fuss. The food was good, but the (alcoholic) drinks were $14 each. That didn't stop people from buying them. You only live once right...?
It must be said, there's a massive fan base out there. The crew in the port were fantastic... and loud (in a good way). No wonder there are rumours flying around about a third Kiwi team in the South Island, possibly Christchurch. Now that would be awesome. And it would be good for Christchurch. Auckland also won the OFC pro League. Another fantastic event, and win. To say that the sport is taking off, is an understatement. I've never supported soccer... but my son is football mad, he follows it like a religion, and it has rubbed off (I still deliberately say soccer, now and then, to wind people up). He was a very proud ball boy at both finals over the weekend (A-league, and OFC Pro League). I am a rugby fan. But I've become more of a football fan for a while now. I love it. The games are just great to watch. And I'll be following my son, hopefully all the way to AFC.
