Check if you're eligible to join online
Joining online is the easiest option if you:
- Are aged 16 or over
- Live in New Zealand and you're eligible to work or study here
- Have a New Zealand mobile phone number
- Haven't previously banked with us.
If you tick all these boxes, continue. If you don't, come and see us in branch.

Complete the online form & verify who you are
Complete our online join form which takes around 10 minutes. You'll be automatically set up with a Free Up account.
Then, we need to verify who you are. You can either:
- Use ID checker on your smartphone.
- Visit your nearest Kiwibank or Local for Kiwibank, with your ID.
In some cases, we'll also need to verify your address and source of wealth and/or funds.

Start banking Kiwi and don't look back
Once you've been verified, you're in. You can log into our mobile app and internet banking, open more accounts, and order a Visa Debit or EFTPOS card.
If you're moving everything over to Kiwibank, we can help transfer your account balances, move your saved payees, automatic payments and direct debits. We can even close your accounts with your previous bank, if you want us to. Find out more about easy switch.

Complete the online form
You can join online and open a joint account.
Both of you need to fill in our online join form, which takes around 10 minutes to complete.
Each of you will automatically be set up with your own Free Up account.

Verify who you are
We'll need to verify the identity of each of you. There are two ways you can do this:
- Using ID checker on your smartphone.
- Visiting your nearest Kiwibank or Local for Kiwibank. You'll need to bring your ID with you.
In some cases we'll also need to verify your address and source of wealth and/or funds.

Open your joint account
Once you've both been verified you can open a joint account. To do this, each of you need to send us a secure message in our mobile app or internet banking, and provide the access number of the person you wish open the account with.
Alternatively, you can visit your nearest Kiwibank or Local for Kiwibank together.

Visit your nearest Kiwibank
Starting young is a great way to build good habits. You'll need to come see us to get set up — drop in to your nearest Kiwibank or contact us to set up an appointment. Since your child's account will be linked to you, we'll need to set up a profile for you as well (unless you already have one).

Verify your child
During your visit, we'll need to verify you and your child's identity and that you're the child's parent or legal guardian.
Please bring your ID as well as proof of relationship, such as an original birth certificate, passport with the same surname, court order or letter from Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children to your appointment.

Access your child's account
Once we've set up your child's account, you’ll be able to see and access their account in internet banking or the mobile app. The types of things they can access will depend on how old they are.

Once you've been verified, you'll be able to do all the things you'd expect, like accessing money from your account and ordering a Visa Debit or EFTPOS card.
