Ever wondered what all those digits on your account number mean? Let us break it down for you.

This is what an account number looks like

  • The first two digits tell you the bank – Kiwibank is 38.
  • The next four digits tell you the branch – for Kiwibank this ranges anywhere between 9000-9499.
  • The next seven digits tell you the account number.
  • The last three digits tell you the account suffix – this will be different for each account you have.

What if a suffix only has two digits?

Some banks insist on suffixes with three digits. If yours only has two digits, simply add an extra ‘0’ to the start. For example, 01 becomes 001.
