How it works

What your children can do at what age

Under 7 year olds

A parent or guardian must operate the account on the kid’s behalf.

7+ year olds

Kids can withdraw money over the counter – a parent or guardian will need to co–sign the withdrawal. Kids can also get access to read-only internet banking so they can see their balance.

10+ year olds

Children can get an ATM/EFTPOS card with parents’ or guardians' permission. Since ATM/EFTPOS cards aren’t available on a First Saver account, they'll need to open another Kiwibank everyday account.

13+ year olds

Kids can withdraw money and make over-the-counter transactions on their own.

They can get access to internet banking and phone banking to transfer money between other Kiwibank accounts. They can also open other types of everyday accounts themselves now too and get an ATM card without parental permission.

15+ year olds

Children can get a Visa Debit Card if they've got another Kiwibank everyday account.

Open a First Saver account

If you’re keen to open an account with Kiwibank for your children, let’s get started.

Child under 13

Opening an account for a child under 13

  1. Give us a call on 0800 523 523 to make an appointment at your nearest Kiwibank. Since your child’s account will be linked to yours, we’ll need to set up profiles for both of you (unless you already have an account with us).

  2. We’ll need to verify you and your child's identity, address, and proof that you're the child’s parent or legal guardian. Please bring some ID, proof of address, and proof of your relationship, such as an original birth certificate, court order or letter from Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children to your appointment.

  3. We'll need you to complete a one-off declaration on your child's behalf to certify their overseas tax residency before their account can be opened in their name. Once we’ve set up your child’s account, they'll be able to see their account in internet banking or the mobile app, the types of things they can access will depend on how old they are.

Child over 13

Opening an account for a child 13 to 16 years old

Give us a call on 0800 523 523 to make an appointment at your nearest Kiwibank.

While they won't need parental permission to use their account, we’ll still need to verify you and your child's identity, address, and proof that you're the child’s parent or legal guardian if you're new to Kiwibank. Please bring some ID, proof of address, and proof of your relationship, such as an original birth certificate, court order or letter from Oranga Tamariki - Ministry for Children to your appointment.

Kids under 16 years old will also need a parent or guardian to complete a one-off declaration on their behalf to certify their overseas tax residency before any accounts can be opened in their name.

Opening an account for a child 16 to 19 years old

Give us a call on 0800 523 523 to make an appointment at your nearest Kiwibank.

If they're opening a new account with Kiwibank, they'll need to verify their identity and address. They can do this online if they have a RealMe verified identity. Otherwise, they'll need to bring two forms of ID and proof of address to their appointment.
