Overdrafts

An overdraft from Kiwibank is great as an emergency back-stop, taking the stress out of unexpected expenses or not getting paid on time.

You can have an overdraft on your Now, Front Runner, Bill Blaster, Free Up and business accounts.

An overdraft should only be used for a short period of time – if you can, try to clear the balance on your next pay day. If you need funds for the longer term, a credit card or personal loan may be a better option.

Eligibility

To be eligible for an overdraft you must:

  • be a permanent New Zealand resident
  • be 18 years of age or older
  • have a good credit history. We’ll do a credit check as part of the application process
  • have an income of at least $20,000 p.a. ($30,000 p.a. if applying jointly) direct credited into your Kiwibank account and
  • have had at least two regular income payments credited into your Kiwibank account.

There's an application fee for overdrafts, whether they're approved or not. If you're not certain whether you meet all of the above criteria, including having a good credit history, give us a call on 0800 11 33 55 to discuss your situation.
