Credit cards - FAQs

If you've got a question about a Kiwibank Credit Card, you'll probably find the answer here. If you can't find the answer to your question, call us on 0800 521 521.

  • How do I set up a direct debit to make my credit card payments?

Download and complete the pdfCredit Card direct debit authority (PDF 60 KB) and send it to us. A direct debit will take your minimum payment out of your account on the due date. Otherwise you could consider an automatic payment, to choose how much you pay, and how often.

  • My card has been lost or stolen – what should I do?

If your card has been lost or stolen within New Zealand, call us on 0800 521 521 and we'll cancel your card immediately.

    If you're overseas, call us collect on +64 4 473 1133.

  • How do I dispute a transaction on my credit card statement?

If you find a transaction on your credit card statement that you didn't make, contact the company who charged you the transaction. If they've made the error, they'll reverse the charge. If they can't help, contact us on 0800 521 521 and we'll investigate the transaction for you.

  • Can I use my credit card overseas?

Yes, you can use your Kiwibank Credit Card in 25 million outlets worldwide – anywhere that displays the MasterCard symbol.

You need a PIN number on your card to get cash out from an ATM. If you'd like a PIN loaded onto your Kiwibank Credit Card, visit your local Kiwibank.

Fees apply to cash advances and foreign currency transactions.

  • How do I make a claim on my MasterCard Gold Travel Insurance?

If you'd like to make a claim, let us know as soon as you can.

    Call us on:

    • New Zealand – 0800 521 521
    • Overseas – call collect +64 9 985 5000

For more information download the pdfKiwibank MasterCard Gold Travel Insurance policy (PDF 336 KB).

  • How do I set up an automatic payment to make my credit card payments?

If you're an internet banking customer, log in and select ‘Pay & transfer’. Select the ‘Transfer’ box and complete the form – remember to set the frequency of your payment (e.g. every month). If you're not yet an internet customer, download and complete the pdfautomatic payment authority (PDF 37 KB) and send it to us. An automatic payment will transfer the amount you specify to your credit card.

  • In what order are payments made from my credit card?

Your payments are applied to the outstanding debit balance of your credit card account in the following order:

    1. Interest, fees and charges included in the closing balance of your most recent monthly statement
    2. Cash advances and balance transfers included in the closing balance of your most recent monthly statement
    3. Other debit transactions included in the closing balance of your most recent monthly statement
    4. Interest, fees and charges since the closing date of your most recent monthly statement
    5. Cash advances since the closing date of your most recent monthly statement
    6. Other debit transactions since the closing date of your most recent monthly statement
  • What's the inactivity fee on the Kiwibank MasterCard Zero?

There's a quarterly inactivity fee of $15 when you don't use your Kiwibank MasterCard Zero at least once in each consecutive quarter (ie every three months) after the date you opened your credit card account.

  • What's the difference between “joint” and “additional” cardholders?

With a joint credit card, both cardholders are responsible for paying any balance owed on the account – so you'll both need to pass a credit check when you apply.

Additional cardholders have no authority over the account – they can't make changes and they're not responsible for paying the account balance. However, they can make purchases, do balance transfers, load their own PIN and set up their own internet and phone banking. We don't perform a credit check on additional cardholders.

    • Joint or additional cardholder fees
  • How do I switch my Kiwibank Credit Card to a different Kiwibank Credit Card?

    Easy – call us on 0800 521 521.

  • I'm transferring to a Kiwibank Credit Card – what do I need to do?

There are a few things you should do when transferring your credit card to Kiwibank:

    • If you want to transfer your balance from another bank's credit or store card to your Kiwibank credit card, request the transfer when completing your Kiwibank credit card application form.
    • If you want to close your other credit or tore card, speak with your card provider and they'll arrange this for you.
    • If you have any payments or direct debits, subscriptions or bills coming out of your other credit or store card, you'll need to change these over to your new Kiwibank credit card.
  • I want to use my credit card at hotels, motels and car rental agencies – anything I should know?

While Kiwibank credit cards are accepted at hotels, motels and car rental agencies, you should ensure that your available balance is 15% greater than the purchase amount.

From the day you check in or hire your car, the merchant will hold the expected purchase amount plus 15% until you complete the transaction. After you complete the transaction by paying the purchase amount, the merchant will continue to hold 15% of the purchase amount for up to 10 days, to cover any expenses picked up at a later date, such as toll calls, mini bar expenses or property damage.
