Advocacy

We believe that banking can be better for all New Zealanders – easier, fairer and more accountable. That’s why we developed our Advocacy Programme – where we use our expertise, experience and influence in the industry to advocate for change to help all New Zealanders.

The Advocacy Programme supports one of our ten guiding principles:

“Kiwibank is a voice for change in the banking industry to make responsible banking real for all New Zealanders.”

If you have any feedback or suggestions, or an enquiry about our Advocacy Programme, please email advocacy@kiwibank.co.nz.

Advocacy initiatives

  • Microfinance: We’re concerned about the lack of fair, affordable credit for low income families who can’t access mainstream loans. So we’re working with the community to develop local microfinance programmes that will provide small loans for essential items to some of New Zealand’s most vulnerable families.
  • Financial literacy: We want to empower New Zealanders to make good decisions about their money by improving their financial knowledge. One initiative in this space is heaps!, our personal financial management tool.
  • Promoting generosity We’re supporting changes that will make it easier for New Zealanders to donate to charities. We know how important this is to our culture in New Zealand, and the great work charities do in our communities.
  • KiwiSaver: The current system makes it difficult to compare schemes because returns, fees and expenses aren’t calculated or communicated in a consistent way. We’ve been advocating for fair, transparent and standardised ways of telling people about fees and performance, and are leading by example with the Kiwibank KiwiSaver Scheme.
  • Saving: We support change that encourages New Zealanders to save, particularly for big life events like university, first home and retirement.
  • Fairer credit reporting: We’ve been campaigning for positive credit reporting so we can access more information about good credit behaviour when making lending decisions. We’re really happy that changes have now been made to allow more comprehensive credit reporting.
  • Switching We’ve been campaigning to make it easier for Kiwis to switch banks for a long time. So we’re really proud that new rules came in on 1 December 2010 to make this happen.
